IMC Mag: "So take us back, Ray. How did you get into music?"

Ray Ramon: "My journey into music began with a mix of passion, inspiration, and a few pivotal moments that shaped who I am today. Growing up in Lagos, Nigeria, I discovered my love for music at a young age. I remember singing at school recitals during primary school and even joining the church choir for a brief period. Although my parents, like many African parents, placed a strong emphasis on academics and traditional career paths like medicine or engineering, I couldn’t shake my passion for music. One of the earliest and most powerful influences on me was watching Michael Jackson’s *“Thriller”* and its making-of video on VHS when I was just five years old. Even though some parts of it scared me as a kid, I was completely captivated by the music, the dancing, and the energy. That moment sparked a fire in me and planted the dream of becoming an artist. A key turning point came in 2008 while visiting my sister in Dartford, Kent, in the UK. I saw an ad that said, *“Record here for 59 pounds,”* and curiosity got the better of me. I ended up meeting John Oram at the Oram Analogue Barn, where he challenged me to write and record a song within 24 hours. It was both terrifying and exciting, but I took on the challenge, and together with session musicians (and John playing drums), we created a track called *“Leave Me Alone.”* By the next day, the song was written, recorded, and sent off to affiliate radio stations. That experience opened my eyes to the world of pop music and became a defining moment in my career. Looking back, it’s clear that my journey into music was driven by an unshakable love for the art, fueled by moments of inspiration and the courage to embrace unexpected opportunities."

IMC Mag: "When did you start to really pursue your music career seriously?"

Ray Ramon: "I started to seriously pursue my music career in **2008**. That year marked a pivotal moment for me when I traveled to the UK to visit my sister in Dartford, Kent. I came across an ad that said, *“Record here for 59 pounds,”* and decided to give it a shot. I met John Oram at the Oram Analogue Barn, and he challenged me to write and record a song within 24 hours. It was an intense but exciting experience, and by the next day, we had created a track called *“Leave Me Alone.”* That moment lit a spark in me and gave me the confidence to take music seriously. I realized that I could transform my thoughts and melodies into real, tangible music, and it was time to focus on making my mark in the industry. From that point forward, I dedicated myself to creating, recording, and sharing my music with the world."

IMC Mag: "What are some of your most proudest accomplishments in your career?"

Ray Ramon: "Some of my proudest accomplishments in my career include: 1. **Winning Best Male Gospel Artist** at the **2011 Afro/Australian Music and Movie Awards** in Sydney. This was a special moment because it was one of my first major recognitions and validated my journey as an artist. 2. **Best Contemporary Christian Producer** at the **2012 Indie Music Channel Awards** in Hollywood for my track *“I Had a Dream.”* It meant a lot to be recognized internationally for my production skills and creativity. 3. **Best R&B Video** in 2013 for *“Times”* and **Best World Music Producer** in 2014 for *“Tenacity”* featuring Spydaman. These awards showed my versatility and ability to cross genres while staying true to my sound. 4. Winning **Best Dance Act** at the **2014 Afro/Australian Music & Movies Awards** for *“Falling For You”* and **Best Dance Song** in 2015 for *“Dance All Night.”* These moments reinforced my impact in the dance music scene. 5. **Best Male Dance Artist** at the **2019 Indie Music Channel Awards** at the Grammy Museum for *“Shake That Booty”* and continuing to win the title again in **2020** during the pandemic. It was a humbling reminder that hard work and consistency always pay off. 6. Being **inducted into the Indie Music Hall of Fame** in 2021. This was a huge milestone for me, as it recognized not just a song or single award, but my entire body of work and dedication to the music industry over the years. Every award and recognition reminds me of the journey I’ve taken, the challenges I’ve overcome, and the people who have supported me along the way. These moments continue to fuel my passion and drive to push boundaries with my music.

IMC Mag: "What do you have coming up?"

Ray Ramon: I’m really excited about what’s coming up next! I have **two brand-new singles** on the way that I can’t wait to share with everyone. The first is *“Just Can’t Take It”* featuring Elisha Solomon. This track has a powerful emotional vibe, with a duet structure that tells a relatable story about love, struggle, and communication in relationships. The second single, *“Low Low Low,”* is a dance-groovy beat that you definitely don’t want to miss. It’s packed with energy and will get you moving from start to finish. Both songs are a blend of my signature sound with fresh influences, and I’m confident they’ll resonate with listeners across the globe. Stay tuned, because these tracks are coming soon, and there’s so much more in the works!
